For an Australian home seeking meaningful evening and overnight storage, 17.5kWh and 24.5kWh are the two most practical sizes to compare. A 17.5kWh battery generally suits a household using around 15–22kWh per day. A 24.5kWh battery is more suitable when daily usage is around 22–30kWh, or when the home has an EV, electric appliances or higher evening demand.

The correct size depends on how much electricity the household uses, when it uses it and how much surplus solar is available—not simply on buying the largest battery possible.

What home battery size suits my daily electricity usage?

Use a recent bill from a normal period. If possible, compare a summer and winter bill because heating and cooling can change daily consumption.

These ranges are a starting point. If much of the electricity is used directly from solar during the day, the battery may be smaller than total daily consumption. If most usage occurs after sunset, or the home needs a backup reserve, choose toward the upper end.

Is a 17.5kWh home battery enough?

17.5kWh home battery is a strong fit for many ordinary households using approximately 15–22kWh per day. It provides considerably more overnight coverage than a small 10kWh battery without moving into the cost and space requirements of a very large system.

This size makes sense when the household has moderate evening loads, uses some solar power directly during the day and does not need to support a large EV charge, pool or extensive backup reserve every night.

When should I choose a 24.5kWh home battery?

24.5kWh home battery is more appropriate when the bill shows approximately 22–30kWh of daily usage or the household expects demand to increase.

Common reasons include:

  • a larger family with high evening consumption
  • an EV charged at home
  • electric hot water, cooking, heating and cooling
  • a pool or other substantial electrical load
  • a meaningful blackout reserve

Why can an oversized home battery waste money?

Every increase in battery capacity requires more modules, cells, electronics and installation hardware. Beyond the single-stack sizes, a system can also need additional stacks, cabling, protection equipment, installation time and space.

The rebate does not increase evenly either. Under the rules effective from 1 May 2026, the first 14kWh receives the full STC factor, the portion from 14–28kWh receives 60%, and the portion from 28–50kWh receives 15%. The customer therefore funds a larger share of capacity added above 28kWh.

Current after-rebate pricing shows the practical difference. Moving from around 17.5kWh to 24.5kWh can add approximately $1,000 to the installed price while providing another 7kWh of storage. Moving from around 24.5kWh to a system approaching 50kWh can add approximately $7,000. The larger jump reflects the extra battery modules, a second stack, additional controls, protection equipment and installation work.

That extra cost is worthwhile only when the energy will be used. A home consuming 10kWh per day is unlikely to cycle a 24.5kWh battery fully, so much of the additional capacity may not produce further bill savings.

Does my solar-system size affect the battery size?

Yes. A battery must have enough energy available to recharge it. Solar-system size, daytime household consumption, season, roof direction and shading all affect how much surplus solar reaches the battery.

Two homes with the same electricity usage can therefore need different battery sizes. Start with the daily-usage figure on the bill, then check how much solar is exported and when electricity is consumed.
